Ever since my lower school days I have equated cherry blossom season with spring break. I look forward to seeing the light pink flowers decorate the trees I view on my daily walk to school. Once a cherry blossom blooms one has approximately 10 days to enjoy its magnificence. The season is relatively short as it usually begins in March and ends by the beginning of May.
One does not have to look very far to enjoy the beauty of these lovely blossoms. A few of my favorite places to enjoy these delicate, pastel blooms include:
Central Park's Great Lawn (mid-park from 79th to 85th Streets)
The Great Lawn always spurs fond childhood memories for me. The first blooms I ever witnessed were from the area's Higan cherry trees. A little further north on the east side of the reservoir one can see the white-pink blooms of the Yoshino cherry trees.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
It is worth a visit to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to surround yourself with clusters of gorgeous flowers. The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden is one of the most tranquil places I have ever visited. Currently, close to twenty varieties of cherry trees are in bloom.
New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
I take great pleasure in watching little children run aimlessly through the various fragrant cherry blossoms at the NYBG. With over 200 cherry trees, one can spend hours perusing the sprawling grounds. This majestic display is not to be missed.
Visit now as these blooms do not last long!
